RG Falla's Quarter Marathon raises over £3300 for Save the Children

Some of the world’s most vulnerable children will receive life saving supplies, thanks to the efforts of local runners.

Coordinators of the ninth annual Save the Children Quarter Marathon said that they are delighted with the results of the event, which took place on Guernsey’s west coast at the end of April (see note 1). Paul Salazar, from event organisers RG Falla Ltd, explained: ‘This year’s event has raised over £3,300 (see note 2), which will all help Save the Children to safeguard the lives over 1 million children worldwide.’ He added:  ‘An amount like that can really make a difference. For instance, it could provide life-saving water filtration for over 660 children and their families, or feed over 2,200 malnourished children for a day.‘

162 runners took part in this year’s quarter marathon, which ran from Crabby Jacks, at Vazon, to L’Eree and back, along the coast road. First over the line was Steve Dawes in a time of 35 minutes and 44 seconds, whilst the fastest female runner was Diane Lawrence, in 49 minutes and 43 seconds. The winning team was Team Rush, from Spearpoint, which received Condor Ferries travel vouchers (see notes 3).

Chairperson of the Guernsey branch of Save the Children, Liz McDonald, thanked the event organisers: “We are extremely grateful for RG Falla’s continued support. It’s all too easy to forget that the world’s poorest children are suffering and in need of help. All money raised by local runners will go directly to them, in the form of life-saving supplies and equipment (see note 4).’ She added that the proceeds of the race would help to save children in over 50 countries, from Angola and Bosnia to Vietnam and Zimbabwe.
